The zone between the fence line and the spray line is the place to
plant valley oaks.
The first few years can be very hard if not protected from grazing and
mowing. It is surprising how accurately
a bay nut can be tossed.
This one is protected from grazing and spraying. It is now very
happy to be there. I guess that the property owners wondered
how these got here, as they would like more.
Manzinita grows quickly in arid places. These actually
provide shade for growing oaks. This one would have done a bit
better if it had been planted in the afternoon shade of the manzinitta.
These valley oaks had long been given up for dead a few years
back. This is a harsh Western facing slope and these are still
alive. While they could have grown more than three feet in
their first year if watered - they had no water for six months of full
summer heat for five years running. And they are still green in
August.
